On NPR this weekend, TED Radio Hour asked its audience an interesting question: “Why do we collaborate?” Specifically, what impulse brings folks together to collaborate online?
The question is an interesting one because it highlights reliance on collaboration as an important detail about the Internet. Without collaboration, there is no content. The backbone of many online services we take for granted would more than likely collapse if collaboration did not take place. Imagine a YouTube without videos, or a Reddit without links! Many of the users on these websites are offered little in the way of monetary compensation, however, so what drives people to work for these organizations for free?
